WELCOME TO THE STUDIO HOMEPAGE
OF
MARY LOU ROBERTS
I began
teaching guitar using the Suzuki method in 1991, when my family and
I moved to Ann Arbor from Cleveland. I had taught Suzuki
Theory and guitar
at The Cleveland Institute of Music. I was getting pretty
good results
teaching children
guitar the traditional way, but thought there were even
more possibilities utilizing the Suzuki Method. As I was
teaching theory,
I saw something in the Suzuki Violin and Cello students, that
I wanted
to strive for. They were interested in music, excited when
they found out
why a scale had half and whole steps in it, had fun tapping rhythms,
and I wanted
to bring that eagerness to guitarists. |

Students generally start
Suzuki Guitar between three and eight years old, depending
on your child's development and the parent's commitment to attending
the lessons,
group classes and leading the daily practices. The Suzuki
Method is
a complete instrumental training that develops the student's playing
all the way
to adulthood, and prepares them for a life of enjoyment through music
making.
Aside from taking private lessons, all my students commit to attending
group classes every other week on Tuesday afternoon. These
classes are scheduled
sometime between 4:00 and 6:00; depending on which group the student is
in. Group classes are an essential part of the Suzuki Method
and very important
to your child's development and success in music.
I get such
a big kick out of seeing children play an instrument! They
have a zeal for
life that is reflected in the way they play and learn. A
music education
offers so much to both kids and parents; an open working relationship
that helps
the students and parents get through the teen years together, taking
small
steps to achieve larger goals, perseverance, attention to detail,
following directions,
learning to admire performers, loving music….. It
is my goal to
be the kind of teacher that inspires, at times challenges, at other
times lets
loose, always giving the best in guitar music and technique.
I hope we have
many joyful lessons together! |
